The dream of creating Gordon’s Healing Haven was born from two transformative experiences: a personal tragedy that changed the trajectory of my life and an inspiring breakthrough moment with my son, Gordon, who is on the autism spectrum.
In the spring of 2021, my life took a devastating turn when a motor vehicle accident left me with severe anxiety, chronic pain, and three herniated discs in my spine. Unable to return to my nursing career—a role that had defined me—I felt lost. Yet, amidst the physical and emotional turmoil, I turned to animals for solace, as I had so many times before.
It began with a bunny. I adopted one in hopes of finding some peace, and to my surprise, that small decision sparked healing not just for me but for my family. Even my two sons, Gordon and Henry, who often struggled with sensory processing and social interactions, were drawn to the rabbits in a way they hadn’t been with other animals. One day, Gordon’s face lit up with joy as he exclaimed,
“It’s a bunny!”
the first time he had verbally acknowledged an animal. That breakthrough moment remains etched in my memory as the spark that inspired our mission.
Motivated by these experiences, I began exploring how the presence of gentle animals could bring comfort and healing to others. In 2022, I started taking bunnies to visit local retirement homes, special needs programs, and preschools. From the very first visits, I knew I had found my purpose. Residents and participants lit up with joy, sharing stories, laughter, and a sense of connection. The healing power of these interactions was unmistakable, and the demand for our services quickly grew.
